It happened around 2:35 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, when officers received a ShotSpotter activation on the 300 block of Union Street in Springfield.
Officers located a man with gunshot wounds who had died from his injuries, said Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit is investigating the incident, he added.
